UniPrint Explores Print File Formats in White Paper
Offers a technical comparison of EMF, OpenXPS and PDF for enterprise printing
Toronto, Canada, August 8, 2013 – UniPrint (www.uniprint.net), the leader in printing virtualization, today announced the publication of its latest white paper, Print File Formats: A comparative analysis of EMF, OpenXPS and PDF for Enterprise Printing. The purpose of this white paper is to provide a technical comparison and analysis of each of the three most commonly used print file formats within Universal Printer Driver (UPD) solutions, and to demonstrate how each influences printing performance in enterprise computing environments.
By using UPDs, organizations can simplify printer management, increase security and reduce print output. While there are various UPD software solutions available, the debate concerning the most appropriate UPD print file format continues. The three most widely adopted print file formats in UPDs are: Portable Document Format (PDF); Open XML Paper Specification (OpenXPS); and Enhanced Metafile (EMF). This white paper outlines the enterprise printing environments of today, as well as examines each print file format in depth, comparing and analyzing each for file size and efficiency, security and support and compatibility.
Arron Fu, VP of Software Development at UniPrint, said, “Managing a multitude of printer makes and models has consistently been a challenge for systems administrators especially in complex environments. With users accessing printers from different networks and locations, the need to control and support the printing environment can become labor-intensive, not to mention extremely difficult. Choosing the best print file format is a crucial step as the format will provide the interface between the operating system and peripheral devices, and will translate commands between the two. The right format will help with security, compression and bandwidth control which are essential to printing efficiently.”
The analysis reveals why PDF is the most fitting print file format for UPD solutions designed for medium to large enterprises. It also demonstrates how the use of PDF can increase an enterprise’s agility, efficiency and security.
“PDFs are small, flexible and generated quickly; they are also the only format widely supported on mobile devices, which is of increasing importance given the growing adoption of smartphones and tablet devices in the workplace,” Fu continued. “Choosing a PDF-based UPD will simplify the organization’s printer management, as well as enable anywhere, anytime, any device printing across different platforms.”
